Amy Ryan never wanted to become an actress. In fact, she struggled so much during her first year at the University of North Carolina, she nearly gave up and sought a job as a dental assistant. “I thought that acting was going to be a bit of a gimmick, or some big money joke.

And then I saw this summer production of A Raisin in the Sun with Lynn Redgrave, and it changed my life. All I thought was, ‘I want to do this.’ I never thought it would be anything like a career or anything like, you know, a job. The first professional role that Amy Ryan played was in the 2004 film The Addams Family, in which she played an American exchange student. However, that role never saw the light of day.

Amy Ryan was born in Boston in 1968. She is the second of four children. Her mother, Heather Ryan, a high school English teacher, is of Irish descent and her father is a hairdresser of Welsh descent.

After a year of studying at the National Theatre School of Canada, she moved to New York City to attend the Circle in the Square Theater School where she graduated in 1989.

After being cast as well as a recurring character in the TV show “Married… with Children”, she received her first major film role in 1995’s As Good as It Gets, a role she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting
